New Deal/WPA Art in Vidalia, Georgia

Post Office New Deal Artwork

Most of the post office works of art were funded under the Treasury Department's Section commissions. Those works that were created using TRAP funds are so indicated. Although the WPA funded the construction of post office buildings, the artwork was not WPA but was usually produced under the Section or TRAP programs. Unless indicated, works of art are located in the US Post Office building.

Vidalia, GA Post Office
"The Country Store and Post Office"
Daniel Celentano (1938) - oil on canvas

This mural was thought to be destroyed. Part of this mural still exists. The mural was damaged during renovations in the 1980's. The original Post Office building is now being used as the Vidalia City Hall. If you look at the photo of the right hand section, you can see the arm of a man that was originally in the middle section that was destroyed.

Many thanks to Jimmy Emerson who contributed the photographs.
